The client approached Brosh Architects to renovate and extend their three-storey, three-bedroom 1980s ex-council end-of-terrace home in West Hampstead, London.
The house had remained largely unchanged for over 40 years, aside from a small UPVC rear extension and the conversion of the garage into an additional room.
The brief was to significantly increase the ground and first-floor living spaces. The ground floor was reconfigured to create a spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area facing the garden, along with a new music room and a guest bedroom with en-suite bathroom.
On the first floor, the existing living room and bedroom were retained, while a new bathroom and a generous office with a balcony were added.
This was achieved by designing a single-storey rear extension and a two-storey side extension to accommodate the additional spaces.
The original terrace block was constructed in red brick, so we chose to build all new additions in black brick.
This contrast clearly distinguishes the original structure from the contemporary interventions, celebrating the relationship between old and new.
