Stratford Kiosks London – Winning Design
studio octopi are delighted to announce that they have won the Stratford Kiosks International Competition.
The competition brief sought a permanent yet adaptable, group of kiosks in Meridian Square, Stratford, London, for use before, during and after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The building will open to the public in May 2011. The competition was organised by The Architecture Foundation on behalf of London Borough of Newham and Design For London, part of the London Development Agency.
studio octopi’s principal ambition was to provide a striking and permeable link between the two transport hubs, Stratford town centre and Westfield. By introducing a covered passageway through the heart of the building both a visual and physical connection is established. Cut outs in the roof dramatically light the thoroughfare which was described by the judges as “clever…providing unity between the bus and train station.”
Up to and during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games the building provides open plan exhibition and information display. Post Olympics four small kiosks and a cafe will be housed in the main body of the building. The Surface Transport Information Kiosk is located at the eastern most point and acts as a fulcrum to visitors entering the square from Stratford town centre.
The building is formed from cross-laminated structural timber panels on screw pile foundations. The timber panels are prefabricated then bought to site and erected within one week. The external surfaces are clad in black zinc. Internally the timber panels remain exposed. The large spans achieved with the timber panels enable a clear internal space with no load bearing walls, leaving the space adaptable throughout its lifespan. Critically, the chosen construction technique requires no wet trades.
The building does not seek to compete with the existing varied architectural language of Stratford, but rather to sit within it with a quiet confidence. The building offers glimpses through and around of the bustling world beyond. The bright red of passing buses flashes though a series of window slits that bisect the building along its spine. With its low profile, the building acts as a piece of navigation in itself. Providing for and servicing locals; receiving and guiding visitors; enhancing and animating Meridian Square.
“…the level of ambition and care which has gone into studio octopi’s winning scheme will create a building that punches well above its weight.”
Eleanor Fawcett, Head of Design for the Olympic Legacy and Lower Lea Valley, Design For London part of the London Development Agency.

Stratford Kiosks Winners
The Architecture Foundation is delighted to announce the winner of a competition to design a group of flexible, free standing kiosks, to be situated in Meridian Square, Stratford, London. The kiosks will serve as key venues for information, orientation and services for use before, during and after the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, and will play a crucial role in Studio Egret West’s ongoing re-development of the area.
Overwhelmed with entries from practices across the UK and internationally, the competition’s jury faced the difficult task of selecting a shortlist, exhibited in Stratford during the London Design Festival, to finally arriving at a winner, studio octopi, with runners up 42 Architects in second place and Moxon Architects taking third place.
Young practice studio octopi’s outstanding and sensitive design which responds to the location by defining a new route through the square, uses materials and forms that will endure it’s heavy usage during the 2012 games, whilst allowing flexibility of use, ensuring longevity for years beyond.
The winning design is due for completion in Spring 2011.

Since 2009, the London Borough of Newham (LBN) has worked with Design for London at the London Development Agency (LDA) to deliver an ambitious programme of public realm works throughout the centre of Stratford with the aim of improving the quality of the town centre for those that live, work, and shop in the area, whilst also preparing to welcome the millions of visitors who will come to the area during 2012.
Studio Egret West, working for LBN, has been closely involved in this project as part of the LDA’s funded Olympic Fringe public realm programme, managed by Design for London. LBN has also worked with Transport for London to discuss proposed changes to the Bus Station and the location of kiosks.
The design competition was open, but not limited to: architects, designers, artists, product designers, and related disciplines. The Architecture Foundation encourages design teams to suggest flexible and innovative yet realisable designs for this permanent structure. The entry deadline was 3 Sep 2010.
