Thursday 20th of October 2022 – RIBA Competitions and Kingston University in London are pleased to announce the shortlist for the process to select a multi-disciplinary design team for a proposed building and public realm improvements at Middle Mill, located to the south-east of the University’s Knights Park campus.

Expressions of interest were sought at the first phase and Kingston University received 60 entries. The evaluation panel, led by Kingston University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steven Spier, selected a shortlist of six teams to proceed to the next phase. The shortlist (in alphabetical order) is:

• Carmody Groarke
• Caruso St John Architects
• Grafton Architects
• Hall McKnight
• Haworth Tompkins
• Reiach and Hall

Kingston University Vice-Chancellor Professor Spier said the high calibre of practices expressing an interest in the project matched the University’s vision and ambition for the future. “At Kingston University, we firmly believe that world-class architectural design helps drive educational quality and innovation,” he said.

“Our new long-term strategy bears the name of our internationally acclaimed Mies van der Rohe Award and RIBA Stirling Prize-winning Town House and embodies our commitment to embedding creativity, innovation and future skills at the heart of our students’ education. The successful multi-disciplinary design team will play a pivotal role in helping us realise our aspiration to create a building that will benefit generations of students, staff and the wider borough community.”

The shortlisted teams will now outline their potential approach to the project and set out how they would work with Kingston University stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of the Middle Mill Building. The process will conclude with a clarification interview ahead of a winner being selected and announced early in 2023.
