Five green visions for the path forged by the railway viaducts through Bankside, London Bridge and Bermondsey, will be revealed for the first time as the Low Line international design competition reaches its final stages.
Launched in July this year by Better Bankside, the Low Line Steering Group and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and supported by Lund Trust, the competition invited architects, landscape architects, ecologists, engineers, artists and other professionals to develop a green and creative vision and strategy to underpin the future development of the Low Line.
Eighty-two entries were received, spanning thirty-five countries. Now the judging panel has shortlisted the five projects in contention for the prize of directing the development of an ecological vision for the Low Line. The identity of the successful project will be announced at the start of December.
LL52 – Crossings, Clearings and Parades
LL162 – Low Line Assembly Toolkit
Low Line, enable new routes and revive disused spaces; the creation of the Low Line Commons, a landscaped promenade connecting neighbourhoods and creating a vibrant district; a green Breathing Spaces walking route aiming to improve health and encourage nature into the city; a Low Line Assembly Toolkit to enable local people to make a significant difference to their environments; and a plan to create A Circular Low Line to celebrate local values, while creating a world-class walkway.
Between now and the final judging on 20 November, the five shortlisted proposals can be viewed in an exhibition that will travel to locations along the Low Line.
Locations include:
8 – 9 November – Made in Bermondsey Project Space, 10 Market Place, London SE16 3UQ
11-13 November – Bankside Space, 18 Great Guildford Street, SE1 0FD, and Old Union Yard Arches, SE1 0BL
14, 15, 18, 19 November – London Bridge Hive, 1 Melior Pl, Bermondsey, London SE1 3SZ
18-19 November – Southwark Council offices, 160 Tooley Street London, SE1 2QH
See www.lowline.london for full details.
The final judging will take place on 20 November, and the winner will be announced in early December. The Low Line team is keen to receive public feedback on the proposals before the final judging session; this can be done by leaving comments at the exhibition itself or by emailing [email protected]
Alternatively, each of the five proposals can be found online at lowline.london
The Low Line RIBA competition is supported by Lund Trust, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and
Peter Baldwin. The evaluation panel includes Lisbet Rausing, Co-founder of Lund Trust, Cllr Rebecca
Lury, Deputy Leader of Southwark Council, Graham Morrison, Partner at Allies and Morrison as the
RIBA Adviser, Donald Hyslop, Chair of Better Bankside and the Low Line steering group, and Head of
Regeneration and Community Partnerships at Tate Modern, and Adam White, President of the
Landscape Institute. The entries are judged anonymously, so the identity of the winning team is not
known until it has been chosen by the panel.
Valerie Beirne of Better Bankside said, “We’re really pleased with the number of entries we’ve
received, and the quality and creativity displayed. The Low Line group is particularly keen to hear the
views of those working and living along and around the Low Line as we choose the winning green
vision.”

The Low Line is a path through some of London’s oldest neighbourhoods, offering a new perspective
on an immensely well-known but ever-evolving part of town. Following the historic rail viaducts just
south of the River Thames, the corridor of the Low Line reveals hidden walkways and enclosed
courtyards, connecting such great landmarks as the Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral, London
Bridge Station, Spa Terminus and beyond.
The Low Line links diverse neighbourhoods and communities, leading visitors off the beaten track
and into areas of creativity, history, industry and entertainment, such as Old Union Yard Arches, Flat
Iron Square and Vinegar Yard, Maltby Street and Bermondsey. It celebrates the heritage of the
railway arches and unlocks the potential of derelict and forgotten sites.
The aim of the Low Line RIBA competition is to develop a unifying vision and strategy to inform the
delivery of greening and biodiversity enhancements along and adjacent to the Low Line, that can
help support social, environmental and economic well-being, and can be implemented organically
over time as the Low Line route evolves.
The Low Line has developed through a group of initial partners including Better Bankside, Team
London Bridge, Blue Bermondsey, Southwark Council, the Arch Company, and Borough Market who
are steering the initial scoping, planning and communication of the project.
