CABE Review: Summary

The development of this constrained site presents many challenges, not least that of building in such proximity to the O2 Dome. In our view, this Greenwich Peninsula Hotel proposal resolves these in a more convincing fashion than the consented scheme for the site.

We welcome the logical organisation of the site. We also support the orthogonal planning and deconstructed form of the hotel and ballroom building. However, there are three areas which we think would benefit from further consideration. These relate to the position and orientation of the serviced apartment building, the architectural expression of the buildings and how they will be read against the O2 Dome, and the approach to landscape.

Subject to a re-evaluation of these aspects of the project, we think the proposal could develop into a fitting neighbour for the O2 Dome. We are confident that the architects will rise to this challenge to produce a scheme worthy of the aspirations of Greenwich.

Greenwich Peninsula Hotel Planning

AEG Europe and Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands’ Hotel and Event Space for The O2 Submitted for Planning

AEG Europe and architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands have submitted proposals to the London Borough of Greenwich for a proposed four star 450-bed hotel and adjoining serviced apartments, focused around a 3,000 sqm special event space with a spectacular triple-height reception pavilion adjacent to The O2.

Greenwich hotel

Situated on the north western tip of the Greenwich Peninsula, the hotel takes The O2 as backdrop; the strong and carefully composed massing of the scheme arranges the primary components into a tight collection of objects, maintaining visual permeability to The O2 from western and southern approaches while expressing the individual functions of the building.

The prominent triple-height reception space is raised above ground, maximizing the spectacular views across the River Thames towards Canary Wharf and The City. Its transparency contrasts with the strong vertical expression of the hotel’s anodised aluminum and glass curtain walling façade. A 40 by 75m clear-span ballroom is set to be the largest bespoke space of its kind in London.
