DESIGN MUSEUM
25 YEARS 1989 – 2014 / DM25
Sir Terence Conran founded the Design Museum 25 years ago. He wanted to encourage everyone to appreciate the value of design.
Design Museum Exhibitions in 2014
Margaret Thatcher, the then prime minister, opened the building in Shad Thames on 5 July 1989. Over the past 25 years, the Design Museum has established itself as the leading museum in the world committed to exploring contemporary design and architecture. Its exhibitions and learning programmes have celebrated recognized and emerging designers and nurtured new talent.
In that time, the face of design has been transformed by the digital revolution and by the globalisation of design. With the new Design Museum due to open in late 2015 at the former Commonwealth Institute in Kensington, it is an ideal moment to reflect on the direction design will take in the next 25 years.
Over the course of 2014, some of the world’s most influential and creative innovators, most of whom have been involved with the museum since its opening, will be coming to the museum to celebrate its anniversary and talk about developing trends and the future of design. They include:
• Alberto Alessi
• Ricky Burdett
• Peter Cook
• Rolf Fehlbaum
• Frank Gehry
• Zaha Hadid
• Thomas Heatherwick
• Jacques Herzog
• Brent Hoberman
• Jonathan Ive
• Martha Lane Fox
• Amanda Levete
• Ross Lovegrove
• Javier Mariscal
• Morag Myerscough
• Marc Newson
• Peter Saville
• Paul Smith
• Alan Yentob
Each speaker will reflect on what is next for design, as well as on the past 25 years in their field, be it fashion, product, technology or architecture.

DESIGNS OF THE YEAR 2014
26 Mar – 22 Jun
Now in its seventh year, this pioneering international award and exhibition celebrates design across seven categories: Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Furniture, Graphics, Transport and Product. Shortlisted nominations are displayed at the Design Museum and a high-profile judging panel decide a winner in each of the categories with one overall winner to be crowned Design of the Year 2014. A new public vote was launched last year and proved so popular that it will be repeated. Category award winners and the overall winner will be announced in May 2014.
LOUIS KAHN – THE POWER OF ARCHITECURE
9 Jul – 12 Oct
The American architect Louis Kahn (1901-1974) is regarded as one of the great master builders of the Twentieth Century. Kahn created buildings of monumental beauty with powerful universal symbolism.
This exhibition encompasses an unprecedented and diverse range of architectural models, original drawings, travel sketches, photographs and films. All of Kahn’s important projects are extensively documented from his early urban planning concepts and single-family houses to monumental late works such as the Roosevelt Memorial (1973-74), which was posthumously completed in October 2012.
Highlights of the exhibition include a four-metre-high model of the spectacular City Tower designed for Philadelphia (1952-57), as well as previously unseen film footage shot by Kahn’s son Nathaniel Kahn, director of the film ‘My Architect’. The view of Kahn’s architectural oeuvre is augmented by a selection of travel sketches, which shed new light on his activity as an artist. The exhibition also includes interviews with leading architects Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Peter Zumthor and Sou Fujimoto underscoring the significance and legacy of Kahn’s work.
Louis Kahn’s most important works include: The Salk Institute in La Jolla, California (1959-65), the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas (1966-72), and the National Assembly Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh (1962-83).
