Situated in Barking town centre, the £14 million new Skills Centre will be a purpose-built exemplar facility providing 14-19 year olds with vocational education and training in Hospitality, Hair and Beauty, Construction and IT. In addition to high quality training facilities for each of the vocational sectors, the Skills Centre will also host a Bistro on the ground floor, giving a commercial face to the facility which allows the students a chance to train in a real working environment.

Utilising the site to the rear of Barking Methodist Church, the Church is also provided with a new entrance onto the square, meeting rooms and community function spaces.

“We are delighted to be involved with the Barking Skills Centre project which will be a fantastic education asset for the community and also a key part of the civic regeneration of Barking Town Centre” said Gavin Miller, Partner at Rick Mather Architects.

The project is funded by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and the Department for Education in partnership with Barking and Dagenham College.

This is the first phase of Rick Mather Architects’ London Road masterplan to redevelop Barking as a major centre within the London Thames Gateway. This has been developed around the creation of the Market Square which incorporates residential, retail, and community uses and re-establishes the links between Barking station and Abbey Green.
