Bagsvaerd Church, Copenhagen, Denmark

Architect Jørn Utzon’s next major design – after returning to Denmark after Sydney – was the Bagsvaerd Church building in Copenhagen. The plain and rectilinear exterior contrasts with the sensuously curving soffits within – the interior creates a welcome surprise.

The German Pavilion for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. This building was used for the official opening of the German section of the exhibition. It is an important building in the history of 20th Century architecture, for many people their favourite modern building. It is known for its elegant pared-down form and its extravagant materials, such as marble, red onyx and travertine.
