The client’s brief called for a space that balances luxury with restraint—prioritising privacy, openness, and a strong connection to its surroundings. The approach brings together architecture, interiors, and landscape as a cohesive whole, allowing each element to seamlessly inform the other.
The design language can be described as Tropical Modernism, where clean, contemporary lines are softened by natural materials and textures. Open planning, earthy tones, and a constant dialogue between built and unbuilt spaces define the villa’s overall character. Rooted in Goa’s cultural and environmental context, the project explores key ideas such as seamless indoor-outdoor transitions, integrating water as a calming design element, and creating private, self-contained zones that enhance the sense of retreat.
Spatially, the villa is configured to ensure both seclusion and fluidity. Carefully positioned built forms, generous setbacks, and layered landscaping create intimate pockets, while pathways and transitions unfold organically across the site. The planning maximises cross-ventilation and natural light, reinforcing a strong connection to the outdoors.
The process came with its share of challenges. Preserving existing mature trees required thoughtful recalibration of the layout, while the region’s monsoon conditions demanded careful material selection and detailing. Additionally, achieving the desired level of craftsmanship through local artisans involved extensive coordination, ultimately adding depth and authenticity to the project.
What defines Sere Villa is its holistic approach—where architecture, interiors, and landscape are conceived as a singular narrative. From handcrafted details to the seamless integration of natural elements, the project reflects a careful balance between design precision and contextual sensitivity.
The project also marks an important milestone for the studio, representing an early exploration of scale, complexity, and interdisciplinary design thinking.
The client envisioned a luxurious yet intimate retreat where guests could unwind in harmony with nature. The resort needed to exude tranquillity and sophistication, with private spaces, lush landscaping, and a strong sense of place. Additionally, the project required a cohesive approach to architecture, interiors, landscape, and branding to create a seamless experience for the guests.
The design style could be described as Tropical Modernism. It blends clean, modern lines with natural materials and textures, emphasizing open spaces, earthy tones, and a deep connection to the outdoors.
Inspirations and key concepts for the development of the project
The project drew inspiration from Goa’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Key concepts included:
●Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living: Drawing from the tropical climate to blur boundaries between the built and natural environments.
●Water as a Central Element: Using private pools and water features as focal points to enhance tranquillity.
●Tranquillity and Privacy: The concept of private sanctuaries shaped the layout, with each villa offering its own pool and garden. This ensured every guest could enjoy a serene retreat.
Spatial Configuration
The resort’s layout was designed to offer privacy while fostering a sense of community. Each villa is positioned with ample setbacks and landscaping to create secluded havens with their own private pools. Shared pathways meander through lush gardens, connecting spaces organically. The spatial flow ensures guests feel immersed in nature while maintaining a sense of exclusivity.
This was accomplished by:
1.Carefully studying the site’s natural contours and vegetation.
2.Designing villas that maximize cross-ventilation and natural light.
3.Placing shared amenities like lounges and pathways away from private spaces.
Difficulties and first setbacks encountered
●Preserving Existing Flora: The site had mature trees that needed to be protected, requiring adjustments to villa placements.
●Local Weather Challenges: Monsoon conditions necessitated meticulous waterproofing and material selection.
●Skilled Labor Shortage: Ensuring high-quality craftsmanship while working with local artisans required additional time and coordination.
The USP of Sere Resort lies in its holistic integration of design disciplines—architecture, interiors, landscape, and branding—to craft an immersive, serene experience. The attention to detail, from handcrafted elements to the seamless blending of built and natural environments, makes it truly unique.
Sere Resort isn’t just a retreat—it marks our journey as a studio, being our very first project. The scale and complexity were initially beyond what we were equipped to handle, but we embraced the challenge with determination and creativity. We are elated that, through our hard work and passion, it has turned out to be a space that beautifully reflects Goa’s rich heritage and natural beauty. Every detail, from the choice of materials to the hand-painted signage, embodies our dedication to honoring this location’s spirit. It’s a place where design meets emotion, creating lasting memories for its guests.
