LUMIO: The Rhythm of the Pearl River
Led by Aedas Global Design Principal Ken Wai, LUMIO is located in Haizhu District, overlooking the Canton Tower across the river and occupying a prime site within the city’s emerging urban with a hotel and serviced apartments.
It is envisioned to contribute to a refined urban skyline and establish a distinctive presence within Guangzhou’s evolving district.
Inspired by the idea of calm, ripple-free river, the design draws from the Pearl River’s fluid form, expressing the gentle rhythm and flowing character of Lingnan’s water landscape.
How can façade design translate the nature into a structured architectural language?
The façade design draws from the interplay of balanced and interwoven natural systems, forming a dynamic architectural language through processes of selection, segmentation and recomposition.
The development of the façade starts by establishing a primary structure, articulating the original form as a uniform grid. Selective subtraction is adopted within this extended grid, generating a directional and gradated rhythm. This order is further refined through fragmentation and recomposition, producing subtle variations that enhance a sense of fluidity.
Integrated with refined warm white stone detailing, the design reinforces a clear vertical hierarchy across the building mass. A composition of varied fins evokes the shifting surface of the Pearl River, capturing the ephemeral light and fluid character of Lingnan’s waterscape. The approach demonstrates how contemporary façade systems can integrate environmental inspiration with design precision in high-density urban contexts.
Enlarged vertical pilasters at the podium establish a strong base while maintaining continuity with the upper façade. The tripartite elevation expresses grounded solidity at the base, ordered calm in the middle, and dynamic movement at the upper levels. Subtle transitions and warm white stone unify the composition, achieving coherence within the building.
‘The transformation of Guangzhou not only reflects the urbanisation, but also showcases the evolution of public services and local culture.’ Ken shares. ‘As a benchmark for the city and a riverfront landmark, LUMIO conveys a new lifestyle, contributing to the vibrancy and richness of the urban life in Pazhou district.’
