This project originated from the client’s need for extra space to relax and also work from home. This terraced house enjoys a breath-taking location, overlooking the rough Scottish sea in Edinburgh. However, the previous layout did not take full advantage of the sea view.

AGORA architecture + design resolved the space and views drivers through a modestly proportioned extension, with the floor level stepped down from the main house. Relocating an existing boiler cupboard maximised the opening between the kitchen and extension and opened up views through the house from front to back.

The extension is accessed by steps that also function as bookshelves and informal seating. Home working and schoolwork can be undertaken through a built-in desk within a compact workspace area. A linear rooflight runs above the steps and floods the spaces with natural light. A small boiler and laundry room are hidden behind a frameless door. The coastal views are enhanced by panoramic bi-fold doors that provide access to a sheltered deck. The doors were chosen for their high performance in Scottish extreme weather conditions, and also for their excellent thermal properties.

The extension is clad externally in standing seam zinc, suitable for a coastal environment. The zinc will weather to a matt grey. A Siberian larch clad recess shelters the doors from the high winds. The extension achieves a safe and striking living environment in the dramatic Scottish coastline.
