The renovation and extension to the rear of this red-bricked Victorian terraced house in a tree lined street in North Dublin is a story about timing.

The house was dark and uninspiring when the new owners, a young couple and their large labradoodles, moved in. Their enjoyment of the dining area was hampered by the lack of light to the rear of the house where a galley kitchen with small windows looked onto a north facing garden. With the news that they were going to be extending their family the time to extend their home seemed right.

Inspired by their friendly neighbour’s renovation completed by De Siun Architects in 2014 the couple decided to engage the same architects. The clients wanted a large living space for their growing family with a contemporary feel so the design proposal introduces a single storey extension with a triple glazed sliding door and 3 large rooflights drawing light deep into the heart of the home.

Building on a contemporary colour palette of dark polished concrete, cool greys and a hint of illuminous yellow the architects inserted hints of an elegant brass throughout from a floor trim to the light fittings and most lavishly on the window and door surrounds. Behind the floating ceiling plane in the kitchen /dining area glimpses of bright yellow appear.

The couple discovered they were soon to be parents of twins and as fate would have it, the site architect had virtually the same due date so the project completion deadline became unmoveable. Tight management and the presence on time-sensitive pregnant bellies on site ensued that works were complete on time and within budget.
