Energy from the Earth: With its establishment in 1992 the Forschungszentrum Dresden – Rossendorf took over the task of developing a modern, internationally competitive research institution at this location. For this purpose steps had to be initiated to modernize buildings and infrastructure in order to run them on a commercially viable basis.

Of particular interest was the centralization of the buildings, some of which were fifty years old, in order to optimize energy consumption. To achieve this objective, a new entrance building with a near-surface geothermal energy system was built.

A total of 40 ground probes extract the heat energy from a maximum depth of 99 metres and distributes it through ceiling concrete core activation over the whole of the building. Heat energy is extracted from the ground in winter and dissipated into the ground in summer, which allows the rooms to be tempered at all times of year.

The extensive, 23-metre cantilever canopy shelters the vehi- cular access to the research site and represents a visual connection to the adjacent logistics building. The block accommodates all the central functions and is linked to the existing lecture theatres and catering facilities by a connecting building. It has a key role to play for the entire campus.
