The Idyllic Danish Holiday Retreat located in Boeslum Strand, a seaside village in Denmark renowned for its beautiful white beaches and grassy plains, lies a charming holiday cottage which has been carefully designed by local architect, Elin Donskov, to provide a 180° view of the water whilst blending seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Kebony, a global leader in the production of sustainable modified woods, was selected to clad the facade of the remote summer house, to provide an environmentally friendly build with a natural and understated appearance.

Constructed by local carpenters, Thorkil Brouer A/S, who have been developing homes for over 40 years, the summerhouse is conveniently positioned adjacent to the beach. South west facing, this seaside bolthole is able to soak up the sun in the morning, whilst offering a beautiful sunny view overlooking the water in the evenings.
The owners of the Danish summerhouse were looking to achieve a silvery, natural external aesthetic with the added benefit of minimum maintenance.

Kebony cladding has successfully delivered on these qualities to create a charming holiday cottage with a fitting and functional facade. The carpenters were delighted to work with Kebony, pitching the material to the owners during the preliminary work and praising the stability of the wood throughout the build, particularly in relation to the delicate corner details.

Developed in Norway, Kebony’s revolutionary technology is an environmentally friendly process which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol – an agricultural by-product. By polymerising the wood’s cell wall, the softwoods permanently take on the attributes of tropical hardwood including high durability, hardness and dimensional stability. Kebony’s ability to withstand all weather conditions made it the ideal material for the exterior cladding of this seaside project.

Architect Elin Donskov ApS commented: “One of the most important factors for the building’s style and durability is the material it’s made of. A natural wood facade that will mature beautifully over time is invaluable. It’s also essential to choose a type of wood that can withstand exposure to the elements without treatment, especially in areas that are open to strong winds and perhaps also sea spray. Kebony delivers just that and I am extremely pleased with the final outcome.”
