Shortlist announced for the RIBA Competition to design the new Southmere Library, the focal building within the ongoing regeneration of London’s Thamesmead.
The international architectural contest for Thamesmead Library attracted entries from 58 design teams.
The new £4.5 million civic building, will sit within a masterplan by architects Proctor & Matthews and Mecanoo.

Peabody and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) are pleased to announce the teams shortlisted to design a new £5m purpose built Library at Southmere Village in the London Borough of Bexley.
The new library and civic building will lie at the heart of the first phase of the planned 1,600 new homes to be delivered as part of the Abbey Wood and South Thamesmead housing zone.
It will be located on the south side of Southmere Lake and a short walk to the new Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) at Abbey Wood station. The new state-of-the-art building will serve the new, existing and future generations of communities living in the area, with a 21st Century library and learning space to the ground floor, with potential to accommodate other civic functions, including learning, health and well-being on its upper floor(s). The building will complement, and sit within, a scheme designed by master architects, Proctor and Matthews, for Peabody.

It is clear there are many talented practices who share our excitement about providing a brand new state-of-the-art library and civic building for Thamesmead. We’ll be working with the local community, the council, and design experts to make sure we get the best possible result for the area. As we approach Thamesmead’s 50th birthday in 2018, I hope this building will become an emblem of London’s new town finally fulfilling its potential.”
Leader of the London Borough of Bexley, Cllr Teresa O’Neill OBE said: “It’s great that we are one step closer to the development of a building that will be so key to the local community. I’m really looking forward to seeing some interesting designs that capture the essence of all the great regeneration work currently taking place in Thamesmead.”
Shortlisted teams will now begin work on their design proposals and competitors have until 21 September to submit their proposals.
The final Evaluation Panel decision will take place in October 2017. The Panel includes John Whiles, Founding Director, Jestico + Whiles; Proctor and Matthews Architects; the London Borough of Bexley & Peabody.
A winner is due to be announced in November 2017.

13th of June 2017 – Peabody and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) are pleased to announce the launch of an international design competition for a new library building in Southmere Village, Thamesmead.

This new civic building will be at the heart of the first phase of the planned 1,622 new homes to be delivered as part of the Abbey Wood and South Thamesmead Housing Zone in the London Borough of Bexley. It will be located on the south side of Southmere Lake within 10 minutes’ walk of the eastern most terminus of the new Elizabeth Line at Abbey Wood.
This new state-of-the-art building will serve the needs of new, existing and future communities, with a 21st century library, learning space and potential to accommodate other civic functions, including learning, health and wellbeing spaces. This competition provides an opportunity for creative design solutions to be explored that engage with the lakeside settings and Peabody’s commitment to investing in the local area.

Peabody’s plans for Thamesmead will deliver around 20,000 new homes in the town. Proctor & Matthews architects are leading on the design of the 1,622 new homes in the South Thamesmead Housing Zone and they will help draw up a shortlist from the expressions of interest alongside experts including: Peabody, the London Borough of Bexley and architect John Whiles from Jestico + Whiles acting as the RIBA Architect Adviser.

Over £1 billion is being invested in Thamesmead over the next ten years, making it not only the biggest regeneration projects in London but one of the biggest in the UK.
