Linking Europe Competition
The Fundació Mies van der Rohe and Vueling join efforts in their common aim to launch the professional career of European students through a competition to personalize an A320 Vueling airplane. The competition celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Mies Award, Europe’s most important and prestigious architecture prize.
Fundació Mies van der Rohe
The Fundació Mies van der Rohe, created to rebuild the Barcelona Pavilion built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1929, awards on a biennial basis, the highest recognition to a work of architecture in the European Union. The prize was first organized 25 years ago. Since then the Foundation has been an active platform to exchange ideas, organize discussions and ask questions-rather than attributing responses-that seek to define architecture’s contribution in the 21st century.
In an interdisciplinary manner, and based in a pavilion which was built as a temporary construction-yet it remains because it made architecture evolve-the Foundation continues generating values through activities that, from theory and pragmatism, trace a path to the debate on the intervention in cities and further urban transformation. The competition itself wants to generate a dialogue on the role of architecture and, among other responsibilities, establishes and builds bridges between international institutions with similar interests.
With the desire to connect with society and the aim of fostering this necessary approach, the award assesses the ability of architecture and its transformative possibilities. The Fundació Mies van der Rohe underlines architecture not only as cultural wealth, but also, and fundamentally, as a transforming element of society.
Vueling Airlines
Vueling was created in July 2004 with an initial fleet of two Airbus A320s, four routes and the objective of providing excellent customer service at a competitive price. Nine years later, Vueling is operating more than 200 routes in 100 cities all over Europe, Middle East and the north of Africa. Now Vueling has 14 operational bases and has transported over 55 million passengers. Vueling is the leading company at Barcelona-EI Prat Airport, where it will reach 100 direct destinations during the next summer season.
