The School of Design and Construction is now accepting team entries to the first Iron Designer Challenge in New York City.
Based on the popular television show “The Iron Chef”, the SDC Iron Designer Challenge will raise funds to support the design program of the School of Design and Construction. A fund-raising goal of $90,000 will cover the cost of this distinctive aspect of the school including material supplies, field trips, portfolios and college visits for the school’s inner-city students, who have goals become tomorrow’s Engineers and Architects.
On June 17th, teams of professionals from New York City’s most influential Architecture, Construction, and Engineering firms will be partnered with students from the SDC for the ultimate design/ build challenge. In light of the most recent catastrophes occurred in Haiti and Chile, these teams will have 3 hours to construct a life-size emergency shelter made from simple, everyday materials and a secret material to be unveiled during the event. Built in front of a live audience and judged by acclaimed industry specialists, one team will emerge as New York’s first Iron Designer. Structural Ingenuity and Best Use of the “Secret Material” will also be awarded, as well as the audience’s People’s Choice Award.
