Bennetts Associates wins University of Cambridge Student Services Centre job

Bennetts Associates has been appointed by the University of Cambridge to design its new Student Services building at the New Museum Site. The Student Services Centre will consist of part new build and part renovation of existing listed buildings. A number of organisations that provide student support, which are currently housed in separate buildings, will be brought together to one location in the centre of Cambridge. The centre will incorporate facilities to support student engagement, a resource area, an open plan space for administrative functions and meeting and consultation rooms.

The new Cambridge Student Services Centre (site shown in colour) will be part of the historic New Museum Site (shown in dark grey), located amongst a number of listed buildings in the City Centre Conservation Area:

Rab Bennetts, Founding Director of Bennetts Associates, said:
“This project has an exceptionally interesting brief and seems destined to produce a rewarding mix of restoration, improvisation and new addition, as part of the University’s programme of regeneration at the New Museum site. We’re delighted to be involved, and to be starting work on our first project in Cambridge.”

A planning application is expected to be submitted in October 2014, with a completion date of May 2017.

The appointment follows Bennetts Associates’ completion of the RIBA Award shortlisted and Civic Trust Award winning Gateway Buildings at St Antony’s College in Oxford last year, and the practice’s previous work at the University of Edinburgh (Potterrow Development, 2008) and the University of Aberdeen (Suttie Centre, 2009).
