• Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust and London Marathon Events announce new competition for Part 1 undergraduates and recently qualified Part 1 architectural assistants
• Opportunity to design the Mile Marker at the 18-mile point of the Virgin Money London Marathon
• Design to celebrate the life and legacy of Stephen Lawrence, who was 18 when he was murdered in 1993

On the day of Stephen Lawrence’s birthday (13 September), London Marathon Events Ltd and the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust have announced an exciting new competition for aspiring young architects to design the Mile Marker for the 18-mile point on the course of the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon. The winning entry will be seen by all 40,000 runners in the marathon and millions worldwide watching the race on television.

Aimed at Part 1 undergraduates and recently qualified Part 1 architectural assistants, the competition is a rare opportunity for students to have their work reach a huge audience, as well as supporting them to develop materials for their portfolio. Applicants will be able to register for the competition individually or in teams of up to four and download the entry pack from the Trust’s website (www.stephenlawrence.org.uk/) from early October.

Stephen Lawrence had hoped to pursue a career in architecture and the competition complements the Trust’s work supporting young people from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds to enter and complete the long journey to becoming a qualified architect. This year alone the Trust’s flagship Building Futures programme will support more than 250 young people through bursaries, work experience placements, internships and industry workshops.

The competition is particularly relevant because Stephen himself was a talented runner. He was a member of Cambridge Harriers running club and competed in the Mini London Marathon in 1988.

The 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon will take place on Sunday 28 April, shortly after the inaugural national Stephen Lawrence Day on Monday 22 April, and the Mile Marker will form part of the positive message of the day, celebrating Stephen’s life and learning from his story. It is not only an opportunity to inspire the many runners on the day, but in particular those running for Stephen’s Team, who will be raising much needed funds for the Trust.

Hugh Brasher, Event Director of London Marathon Events Ltd, said: “We are proud to support the work of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust through this competition, which offers young architects a high-profile design opportunity at the world’s greatest marathon and celebrates Stephen’s legacy in the first year of the inaugural Stephen Lawrence Day.”

Sonia Watson, Chief Executive of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust said “This is a very exciting and rare opportunity for architecture students to have their work seen by audiences across the world. It is also great way to celebrate the first Stephen Lawrence Day, bringing together his passion for architecture and design with his love of running. We are excited to see the designs that entrants come up with.”
