Jindabyne Library and Community Centre Building, NSW, Australia

A new carbon-negative library in Jindabyne, nestled in the stunning Snowy Mountains, embodies an architectural harmony between natural materials and innovative assembly methods, creating a connection to its mountain and lakeside surroundings. The building draws on the region’s natural beauty and local resources, establishing itself as both a functional community space and a reflection of the environment it inhabits.

The library rests on a robust stone plinth, a deliberate homage to the rugged granite formations of the nearby mountains and the local architectural vernacular. This stone base not only grounds the structure but visually anchors it to the mountain landscape, blending seamlessly with its surroundings. Above this solid platform rises a sophisticated interplay of interlocked, prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) elements, which form both the structure and interior finish of the library.

The CLT, sourced locally, is integral to the library’s identity and environmental ethos. Its precise geometry defines the library’s lofty and welcoming interior spaces, creating a warm and tactile environment that reflects the natural textures of the surrounding forests. The selection of CLT goes beyond aesthetics; it allows the project to achieve carbon-negative status, as timber naturally sequesters more carbon than is emitted during its production and transportation. This choice also underscores the building’s connection to place, emphasizing sustainability while showcasing the potential of regional timber industries.

The library’s construction process was equally innovative, incorporating principles of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) and disassembly. These strategies prioritized modularity, precision, and efficiency, resulting in a structure that was cost-effective and quick to construct while still being adaptable for future needs. The use of prefabrication allowed for the efficient assembly of the library’s structural elements, which were erected in just two weeks. From initial engagement to project completion, the timeline was impressively streamlined to under 10 months between 2021 and 2022, despite the challenges of working in a remote regional location.

This expedited delivery was made possible by relying on skilled local labor, ensuring that the project was not only a showcase of sustainable materials but also a contributor to the local economy. The library has since been embraced by the Jindabyne community as a symbol of resilience and innovation, addressing a much-needed demand for social infrastructure in regional areas.

The library’s adaptability and accessibility underscore its role as a model for future projects. By demonstrating how Cross Laminated Timber can be harnessed in ways that are practical, cost-efficient, and environmentally responsible, this project sets a precedent for other regional developments to follow. The result is more than just a library—it’s a place where the warmth of timber, the solidity of stone, and the ingenuity of sustainable design converge to create a lasting community resource.
