The Most Successful World Cup Teams

October 17, 2022

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is just a month away, and one nation will be crowned as the best country in football in the biggest competition in the world. There will be 32 nations in this World Cup, spanning six different continents, all with one goal in mind.

While nobody knows what will happen when the national teams arrive in Qatar for this World Cup, there may be a way to see what some of the most likely outcomes are by looking at history and seeing that history will tend to repeat itself. There have only been eight different teams that have won the competition, a competition that began in 1930.

Most successful World Cup teams

Brazil

Brazil is the most successful World Cup team in history, winning five World Cups while also competing in two World Cup finals. Brazil won the tournament in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. Brazil has had some of the greatest World Cup players of all time, with the likes of Pele, Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho, and has a terrific squad now led by Neymar. Brazil is one of the top favorites to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the current FIFA World Cup standings.

Brazil currently has the likes of Neymar, Roberto Firmino, Vinicus Jr, Marquinhos, and Alisson, amongst many others in their squad, making them one of the deepest nations in all of the World Cup. Brazil is dominating their opponents and is on a seven-game winning streak, and with the attack that they have, they may not see too many losses when they arrive in Qatar.

Germany

Germany’s history in the World Cup finals can be viewed as historic and great or disappointing, depending on which fan you talk to. Germany has won four World Cups and has also lost four World Cups finals. Germany prevailed in the 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014 World Cups and lost the finals of 1966, 1982, 1986, and 2002 World Cups.

Germany has had some of the greatest World Cup players of all time on their squads, such as Gerd Muller, Miroslav Klose, Franz Beckenbauer, and current German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Germany is once again one of the favorites for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and with the solid team they have in every area of the pitch, they can easily tie the record for most World Cup victories by the end of December.

Italy

Italy was the first nation to ever win back-to-back World Cups, winning the second ever World Cup in 1934 and the third in 1938. The Italians have won four World Cups, tied for the second most all-time. Italy’s last World Cup victory was in 2006, a team led by the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Gigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Francesco Totti, and many others. The final is most notably remembered for the Zinedine Zidane headbutt in their matchup against France, where Italy was victorious on penalties.

Italy failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup and will not feature in the competition. This was a huge letdown for the Italians, as they were coming off of winning the Euros against England last summer. It will be odd not to see the likes of Ciro Immobile, Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, etc.

Argentina

Many neutral fans will be rooting for Argentina to win this world cup considering this will be arguably the greatest player of all time. This looks to be Argentina’s best year to win the competition, as they are currently on a 35-game unbeaten streak and are the most recent winners of Copa America in 2021.

Argentina has been spoiled in seeing some of the best in the World Cup, winning two in the competition’s history. Argentina won in 1978 and 1986. Argentina has seen the likes of Lionel Messi and Diego Maradonna represent their countries, arguably the two greatest players of all time, and if Messi can win the World Cup in 2022, he may cement himself as the greatest player to have ever played.
