Superstudio – Italian Architects
Cristiano Toraldo di Francia was the founder of the radical group “Superstudio” in December 1966 in Florence in coincidence with the first exhibition of “Superarchitettura”.
He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of Florence with a “Tecnomorphous architecture” thesis by the title of “Holyday machine on the Calabrian Coast” (published by Domus 1968), which drawings are now owned by the permanent collection of Centre Pompidou and by MAXXI Archives.
His researches on the renovations of the language of architecture and of the role of the architect in a late capitalistic society, are documented by several publications through out the world, and have been shown in the major art museums and exhibitions: from the Venice Biennale (1978,1999) to the Milan Triennale (1973) from the Museum of Modern Art NY (1972, 2002), to the Centre Pompidou (1996, 2000), and finally the MAXXI (2011).
Superstudio activity has been published on several magazines from Domus to Casabella, Architectural Design, Perspecta, J I D, Design Quarterly, etc. The projects in form of drawings, photomontages, or movies as well as the objects of design are now part of the permanent collections of Centre Pompidou, MOMA, Metropolitan Museum, FRAC, MAXXI.
After the termination of Superstudio in 1978, he starts his own Design firm, continuing the wide range of activity from industrial to architectural and urban design.
After collaborating to the edition of the book “Superstudio, 1966-1982 storie, figure, architetture” (1982) for Electa, in the same year he is editor of “Superstudio & Radicals” (1982) for the japanese Moryama editions.
Since 1973 he has been teaching at the California State University in Florence and has been visiting professor at Rhode Island school of Design, Kent state University, Syracuse University.
Since 1993 he has been called to teach in the new Faculty of Architecture of the University of Camerino in Ascoli Piceno, where he became associate professor in 2001.
