According to Morgan McDonnell Architecture Ltd, “The project comprises the refurbishment of MacKenzie House a grade B listed former Edinburgh Academy boarding house, with two 4 storey new build residential blocks located in the gap sites on either side. The new buildings have been designed to achieve a sympathetic scale and use of materials to its existing neighbours on Kinnear Road. The development will contain a total of 8 flats and 1 townhouse across the 3 separate buildings with private gardens overlooking extensive recreation grounds and parkland to the south, as well as off street parking. The project is scheduled to complete in phases between February and June 2016.£

EAA Awards 2015 Building of the Year Winners

The Edinburgh Architectural Association Awards were announced and presented at a drinks reception in the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation on Tuesday 31st March, attended by around one hundred architects, sponsors and their guests. The EAA Building of the Year Award for 2015 went to Advocate’s Close by Morgan McDonnell Architecture.

Forty Six entries were submitted this year and 19 short-listed projects were visited by the judging panel in March 2015. Awards were made in five categories: Building of the Year; Conservation and Regeneration; Small Project, Wood and Ambassador. The judging panel comprised of Susan Edington – The Haining Charitable Trust, Annabel Cooper – Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation, Donald Canavan RIAS – EAA President, Beth Fraser RIAS – EAA Council Member.

In each category there was a clear winner, however as the standard was very high a number of commendations were also given.

RIAS Announces Strong Scottish Shortlist for RIAS/RIBA 2014 Awards

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has announced a 27 strong shortlist for its 2014 awards. The judging panel for this year includes Douglas Read PPRIAS, Marjorie Appleton FRIAS, Liz Davidson Hon FRIAS, Craig White RIBA and George Oldham RIBA RIAS, representing the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The shortlist for Scotland comprises the following buildings (with comments from the judges):
