Architect Michael Manser dies aged 87.

Michael Manser CBE RA was a British-based architect. He was a president of the Royal Institute of British Architects and established his own successful architecture practice in 1961.

British Council Building, Dar Es Salaam

Michael qualified as an architect in 1954 and went on to establish The Manser Practice in 1960. He is widely recognised as an innovator, educator, writer and leader in the profession. Michael is famously a past President of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

He passed away following a stroke, the second he had suffered in the last year.

Michael first designed a house for his parents and later himself; he continued to produce adventurous houses and built a fine reputation for modernist design. His main influence was the German architect Mies van der Rohe, but he also took influence from Andrea Palladio, and the mathematics of proportion. He met fellow Modernists through his journalistic work in the 1950s / 1960s; writing for fortnightly for the Observer, Architectural Design and Home magazine.
