Historic Environment Scotland Conservation and Climate Change Award Winner

A remarkable conversion of a Victorian council depot to create 52 new homes for affordable rent in the centre of Glasgow has been named as the winner of Historic Environment Scotland’s Conservation and Climate Change Award, a Special Category Award of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland’s (RIAS) Awards.

The Lighthouse Glasgow
Housed in a Glasgow building (former Glasgow Herald newspaper offices & works) by famous Glaswegian architect Rennie Mackintosh. The Lighthouse was opened in 1999 as part of Glasgow’s year as the UK’s City of Architecture and Design. It was the landmark building of the year. The building is located in the centre of the city, just west off Buchanan Street. It has been criticised for not being visible enough, being located down a small alley. The design by Collective no doubt followed a brief to increase visibility.

Hawkhead Centre in Paisley
The Hawkhead Centre has been delivered in tandem with a new Royal Blind 54-room care home on the same site, and is Scottish War Blinded’s flagship facility on the west side of Scotland, building upon the success of their existing facility, the Linburn Centre, in the east.
