Arlington, Texas – (October 9, 2020) – The leadership team of the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation (NMOHMF) Mayor Jeff Williams, president of Arlington Tomorrow Foundation and Rafael Viñoly, principal and lead designer of Rafael Viñoly Architects, celebrated the 1-year anniversary of the National Medal of Honor Museum’s (NMOHM) through a live virtual event this past Thursday evening.

The team provided an update on the incredible achievements made this year by the Museum Foundation and released the first architectural renderings of the Museum’s new home by Rafael Viñoly Architects, made possible by a generous first in legacy gift from the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation.

The Foundation highlighted the progress made in the past year towards building the Museum, which will be in Arlington, Texas and dedicated to honoring the more than 3,500 brave Americans who received the nation’s highest award for valor in combat.

NMOHMF Chairman of the Board Charlotte Jones announced that the Foundation surpassed $61 million in total funds raised, putting it ahead of schedule to build both the Museum in Arlington, TX, and the Monument in Washington, DC. “We have made tremendous progress this year – in elevating the profile of the Medal of Honor among the American people, and in raising the money necessary to make this important undertaking a reality,” said Jones. “We’re proud of our progress so far – especially the pioneering gift from the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation. We are so excited about what’s to come.”

A significant contribution to the Museum was announced by Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams, President of the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation. Said Mayor Williams: “The Arlington Tomorrow Foundation is thrilled to have made a legacy gift of $3.5 million to the capital campaign to build the National Medal of Honor Museum. Through our gift, we are underwriting the museum’s breathtaking architectural designs which beautifully capture our nation’s gratitude to our greatest heroes and ensure their inspirational stories are shared with future generations.”

Rafael Viñoly, principal and lead designer of Rafael Viñoly Architects spoke on how the design inspiration for the new Museum was realized by chance as he lifted a heavy slab of metal in his model studio in New York City. Lifting the dense and daunting slab made him think of the heavy burdens the nation’s men and women in uniform lift in battle as they protect and defend us.

The strength of steel – forged in fire – is akin to the strength of our armed forces, which is forged in the heat of battle. The main exhibitions of the museum will be housed in a remarkable 25,000 square foot slab of steel seemingly suspended in mid-air. “As someone who wasn’t born in America, but chose it as my home more than 35 years ago, it is the privilege of a lifetime to have the opportunity to design and build America’s next national treasure in Arlington –the American Dream City.

This museum will proudly celebrate the service and sacrifice of the most courageous members of a great American institution –our armed services,” said Viñoly. “I am humbled to play a part in inspiring current and future generations of Americans by recognizing these exceptional patriots and designing a building which will boldly demonstrate their deep love of country, of devotion to others, and unity.”

Joe Daniels, NMOHM President and CEO said, “We’re thrilled to release the first architectural renderings of the Museum today, showcasing the inspired work of Rafael Viñoly,” who was selected as Chief Architect in January. “Despite the challenges our country and the world have faced this year, the National Medal of Honor Museum and Foundation are proud to report that Americans’ commitment to honoring our heroes remains unbroken. 2020 will be a landmark year for our organization.”
