Modern California Beach House, Aptos
Niche Interiors reimagined this dated & dark 1950’s space to integrate their client’s modern aesthetic while bringing in more natural light and highlighting the incredible ocean views.
A light, textural palette is used throughout with white oak floors and ceilings, board formed concrete and raked white tile in the bathrooms.
The interiors feature a mix of modern furniture and lighting alongside sculptural, vintage pieces that give a nod to the home’s mid-century roots. Vintage Charlotte Perriand leather dining chairs are paired with a clean-lined table and Holly Hunt chandelier in the dining area.
A contemporary sectional, carved wood coffee table and a Finn Juhl Pelican armchair provide a cozy conversation area by the fireplace.
The oversized island provides additional seating and prep space in the kitchen, which features concrete countertops and backsplash and plywood cabinets.

In addition to a clear relationship between the various program elements, bringing daylight deep into the building proved to be a driving factor in the design. Given that the building is located in a tight urban condition, this created a challenge for extending daylight into the building in a meaningful way.

Aptos, Santa Cruz County, California
Aptos is an unincorporated town in Santa Cruz County, California, United States of America. The town contains several small communities with a combined population of 24,402, including Aptos Hills-Larkin Valley, Aptos Village, Cabrillo, Seacliff, Rio Del Mar, and Seascape.
The name Aptos is Ohlone, meaning “the people”. Aptos was traditionally inhabited by the Ohlone Awaswas people. The name is one of only three native words that have survived (in Hispanicized form) as place names in Santa Cruz County (the others are Soquel and Zayante).
