As children living in the sleepy Southern California town of Hermosa Beach, architect Luc Berne and photographer Shanden Brutsch were surrounded by surfboards and beach cottages which were built in the early 1900s. As they grew, they watched Hermosa evolve into a sophisticated city by the sea. Lucs’ latest creation shown here is a blend of industrial and beach modern which prioritizes community, warmth, and expression.
Within this 3,200 sq. ft home 4 bedrooms and 3.5 baths contribute space for relaxation and personal space. The upper floor of this property is a large loft type space ready for anything! With bright, angular, uncomplicated walls there is plenty of space for art.
The floor area of the home is dynamically open and invites every activity from finger painting while others cook or play the piano to elegant dance parties. Bulletproof epoxy concrete lends strength to the dining room, kitchen, and the deck, whereas aluminum doors and windows frame the flow to the walnut exterior under the metal fascia panels. The detailing of the home is purely functional from the flush kitchen cabinetry to the steel stairs and railings to the sliding glass walls which invite the ocean breezes in.
Luc is a California licensed architect with 15 years of experience, and the founder of Atelier Berne, a Hermosa Beach based firm which leads toward modern aesthetic while keeping the warmth and intimate feel of the modest pied-à-terre. “Though much of my life has been spent in this beach town my Parisian origins continue to strongly inform my designs. My homes acknowledge the hustle of a thriving metropolis as well as the respite afforded by laid back surf culture.”
