Cocktails at 8 – Yosemite Residence

Yosemite Property, CA, USA design by Greg Wolfson Interiors

I started with a very distressed property. The owner had bought it well below market as it was so ugly. Iron bars covered the windows, heavy drapes covered all the windows inside. Old blue carpeting was used in every room. None of the walls had been painted in at least 30 years. The smell was horrible in that place!

We started by removing all coverings inside and out! I took inspiration for this house from the movies, such as “TOPPER”, “THE THIN MAN”, and many other high style comedies from the 1930’s as well as from famous decorator Billy Haines.

I went with a black & White & gold theme for the exterior, highlighting the unusual columns, ocular openings, arches and flat roof design.

I brought the outside in with using black and gold paint to create dimension and drama to the walls, including, in the living room using black paint as a 3′ border on the main wall.

Having taken down the wall between the entry, hall and living room we had a grand space to play with . I designed large, low, and deep, tufted sofas in Silver Metallic leather and Tim Shockley provided art for the space.

In the game room we encountered a problem with not being able to move the pool table, so I had it painted gloss white, and had black felt put in instead of the traditional green field. I custom designed the mirrored furniture to highlight how light and bright the room is, and the sofa I designed was covered in Patent Leather White crocodile fabric. I added a bit of whimsy with the custom brown mohair Morrocan love seat, and followed up with Morrocan patterns for the carpet and pillows.

For the Five bedrooms in this house, I took inspiration from Trina Turk’s home bedding line, and each room has a unique, yet highly unified feeling to it. Very bright, mod, and different. I designed different head boards for each room, and we restored the concrete floor through most of the house.

In the kitchen, I enhanced the original galley space by adding a restaurant style white vinyl booth, and accenting the wall behind it orange.

Outside, the concrete surrounding the pool was all broken and jagged. We removed the existing concrete, I found the great black and white striped cabanas and poured concrete pads to set the loungers on. I also added a spa and fire-pit that mimic the shape of the roofline around the house.
