The Galleria at Sowwah Square, the centerpiece of the Sowwah Square development on Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi, recently hosted its grand opening.
In 2012 Space Group completed the refurbishment of the former industrial building designed by architects Ove Ekman and Einar Smith and erected from 1896 to 1899.
CT Hub is an eleven-storey building with two levels of retail space and nine levels of light industrial offices and production facilities, totaling 34,000 square metres. The building’s massing is conceived as a ‘jewel box’, with forms and patterns embossed and carved out to create courtyards, gardens and terraces.
Although aspects of this building look perfectly normal – the straight tower, the repetitive fenestration – look at the podium, it has been jacked 36m above ground level. Why? The architects put forward their case which seems based on challenging tradition, “defying an architectural convention” but also on trying to ‘broadcast’ the virtual activities of the city’s financial market by being more visible, ‘glowing at night’.
