In 1997 Stirling Council held an invited competition to renovate the Old Tolbooth as a music focused arts venue, opening the building up to the local community and the wider public for performance and participation.
The idea that was to evolve into the building named CIRCA originated in the late 1980’s. The Everard Read Gallery purchased from the Johannesburg City council a property adjoining the ERG at the corner of Jellicoe and Jan Smuts avenues.
Johannesburg is home to Circa on Jellicoe, a multi-media art gallery designed by South African based practice, studioMAS.
