These two projects on the Glärnischstrasse 2a and 7 in Küsnacht were built within two years of each other.

They illustrate the move towards increased density at present occurring in this popular residential district. The issues are therefore integration in the existing context, the grain and the sculptural design of the volumes.

The building consists of a recessed, plinth-like ground floor with garages, staircase and a small granny flat, the projecting upper floor with the studies and bedrooms and the attic level with the living and dining room, kitchen and terraces. With its freely hovering volume and an approach drive for the car below this house recalls Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier in Poissy.

However the recessed plinth in this project has a different significance: it expands the restricted outdoor space and thus enlarges the views. By separating the rooftop level into two parts an excessively large volume is avoided, and the two “humps” created also reveal that this building is a house for two families. The building changes its appearance according to the position of the sun and, despite the tight nature of the site, preserves the hovering character also found in the villa outside Paris.
