Lead 8 celebrates completion of Cross Tower renovation in Shanghai
Hong Kong based multi-disciplinary architecture and design studio Lead 8 is pleased to announce the completion of the repositioning and renovation of Cross Tower in Shanghai, China. A commercial office tower originally constructed in 1998, Lead 8 was commissioned by Gaw Capital, a leading commercial real estate developer in Hong Kong, to redesign and reposition the architecture and interior of the building.
“We are honoured to partner with Gaw Capital to design this 18 year old art-deco inspired commercial building in Shanghai’s Huangpu district,” said John Denton, Co Founder & Executive Director of Lead 8, “The transformation of Cross Tower into a modern, loft lifestyle office brings a whole new personality to the building.”
Located in an old neighborhood in the Huangpu district of Shanghai near the historic Bund riverfront, the repositioning and renovation of Cross Tower adopts a sophisticated industrial character, complementing the original architecture of the tower, which was inspired by the art-deco style of many of the buildings in the area. The crisp contemporary intervention at the podium level, creates a harmonious composition of old and new. The interior spaces of the main lobby have a distinctly relaxed feel, with an eclectic mix of materials and furniture and a refined industrial look.
As an integral part of the design composition, the landscape plaza enhances the area, balances the commercial and public areas for the benefit of the community. In a city where green space and public realm are limited, the abundance of landscape throughout the development creates a more intimate, inviting outdoor environment and a place for gathering and social interaction.
“The new design brings renewed vitality to the old neighbourhood and contributes to the rich fabric of the district. The refreshed identity of Cross Tower sets a new benchmark for contemporary commercial offices in the city quarter,” said Claude Touikan, Co Founder & Executive Director of Lead 8.
As the first “loft” style commercial building within the district, the redesign and repositioning of the building brings new opportunities for the transformation of existing space. The new character of Cross Tower provokes a true sense of place and creates a vibrant new commercial destination in the Huangpu district, whilst establishing economic and social vitality to the community.
