The flat table top of the Protoype Liquid Glacial table appears transformed by the subtle waves and ripples evident below the surface which seem to pour into an intense vortex that forms the table legs. Like the previous Liquid Glacial tables, this new table is milled and hand polished to create an pristine finish. The design embeds surface complexity and refraction within a fluid dynamic.

“I have always been interested in the concept of fluidity,” says Hadid. “Using all the advances in design, material and manufacturing technologies, we are now able to achieve even greater results in the work.”

The Liquid Glacial design embeds surface complexity and refraction within a powerful fluid dynamic. The elementary geometry of the flat table top appears transformed from static to fluid by the subtle waves and ripples evident below the surface, while the table’s legs seem to pour from the horizontal in an intense vortex of water frozen in time.

The transparent acrylic material amplifies this perception; adding depth and complexity through a flawless display of infinite kaleidoscopic refractions. The result generates a wonderful surface dynamic that inherits a myriad of colours from its context and continually adapts with the observer’s changing viewpoint. The form is of its creator; a design that does not compromise functionality or ergonomic requirements and a coherent evolution of her architectural narrative exploring movement through space.

Liquid Glacial comprises a series of tables resembling ice-formations made from clear and coloured acrylic. Their design embeds surface complexity and refraction within a powerful fluid dynamic. The pristine geometry of the flat table top appears transformed from static to fluid by the subtle waves and ripples evident below the surface, which seem to pour from the horizontal through an intense vortex that forms the table legs.

The transparent acrylic material amplifies this perception, adding depth and complexity through a flawless display of infinite kaleidoscopic refractions. The result generates a wonderful surface dynamic that inherits a myriad of colours from its context and continually adapts with the observer’s changing viewpoint. The form is of its creator; a design that does not compromise functionality or ergonomic requirements and a coherent evolution of Hadid’s architectural narrative exploring movement through space.

Liquid Glacial tables are milled and hand polished to create their exquisite finish. They are available in clear and colour. The coloured pieces radiate light from the base of the legs throughout the work via a series of refracted shards which continually realign as the viewer walks around the table.

Dune Formations

Dune Formations, created exclusively for David Gill, is exhibited in Hadid’s signature green/black colour. This unique collection of furniture is inspired by the forms of natural forces present in the creation of sand dunes. It is an interior landscape of furniture elements, which act as individual pieces as well as a complete installation. Furniture pieces including wall shelving, tables, benches, and something that Hadid describes as a tree – a vertical shelving sequence.

Every piece of the installation challenges traditional Cartesian geometries by blending the vertical and horizontal into continuous three-dimensional surfaces. Advanced 3d modelling techniques, digital production processes and innovative materials have been combined to achieve these unique objects, finished in brilliant dichroic paints. The high-gloss surfaces accentuate the flowing three-dimensionality of the objects and like the Liquid Glacial tables create a sense of continuous change as you move around them.

Dune Formations is available in orange/gold, chrome, silver and the black/green on show. Hadid’s colours aim to suggested particular mood and ambience. Orange/gold: sand dunes, golden sunset, earth, warmth. Chrome: space, liquefield reflection, mirror metal, technology. Green/black: sense of deepness, mystery, green hues connections to the natural world.

Both bodies of work Liquid Glacial and Dune Formations represent Hadid’s application of her architectural process to the design of furniture. Known for pushing the boundaries of architecture and design, her fluid forms are informed by multiple perspectives in defiance of accepted ways of working in space.

Hadid’s key architectural projects include the Rosenthal Centre for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati, the Phaeno Science Centre in Wolfsburg, Germany, the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympic Games, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome and the Guangzhou Opera House in China. She has been resident in London since attending the Architectural Association in 1972.
