Casa do Alpendre was developed from a “blank slate” on an empty plot in Quinta da Coutada, in Vila Franca de Xira. This place is characterised by a wide architectural diversity, lacking a uniform language or any evident relationship between the buildings. Nearby, the presence of an industrial facility also stands out, marked by large roof structures and façades clad in different types of metal sheeting.
The strategy behind the house’s L-shaped layout responds to several constraints. Firstly, it establishes a street frontage capable of integrating the proposal into the urban logic of the subdivision, without immediately revealing the true scale of its volume. Secondly, through its longitudinal wing, this configuration protects the house from northern exposure, orienting the shared living spaces towards the south. At the same time, it allows the house to “turn its back” on the large industrial complex located at the rear of the block, to the north.
In this way, the L-shaped layout positions the sleeping areas to the east and the living areas to the south/west, creating an outdoor space sheltered from the surroundings and oriented towards the sun, assuming the role of a central nucleus of privacy, openness and light.
Along the longer wing extends a continuous south-facing porch — a habitable extension of the house that simultaneously functions as a space for dwelling, circulation and climatic protection. On the opposite side, a ramp follows the natural slope of the terrain, stitching together the different exterior levels.
Programmatically, the house is organised through a clear separation between social and private uses, dedicating the longer volume to the social areas and the shorter volume to the private quarters. In both volumes, the pitched roof configuration is used to create two habitable attic spaces.
The living room and kitchen therefore occupy the continuous space of the larger volume, without visual barriers, beneath the generous roof void. Perpendicular to this volume are four bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, as well as a walk-in closet shared by two of them. At the intersection between the two volumes are the circulation halls, the pantry, the guest bathroom and the staircase leading to the attic of the main volume.
The attic of the smaller volume is accessed through the bedroom at the end of the wing, where a bespoke timber staircase functions simultaneously as access element and as wardrobe/bookshelf. At roof level, a technical terrace accommodates the equipment and infrastructures necessary for the functioning of the house.
The exterior space includes the laundry room and an additional bathroom, both located beneath the continuation of the pitched roof of the main volume. On an upper platform sits the swimming pool and, finally, at the lowest level near the street frontage, a forecourt provides parking for three vehicles.

A Casa do Alpendre foi desenvolvida sobre a “folha branca” de um lote vazio na Quinta da Coutada, em Vila Franca de Xira. Este loteamento caracteriza-se por uma grande diversidade arquitectónica, sem uma linguagem uniforme ou relação evidente entre as construções. Na proximidade do lote destaca-se ainda a presença de uma unidade industrial, marcada por grandes coberturas e fachadas revestidas com diferentes tipos de chapeamento metálico.
A estratégia de implantação da casa em “L” procura responder a vários condicionantes. Em primeiro lugar, estabelecer uma frente de rua capaz de integrar a proposta na lógica urbanística do loteamento, sem revelar imediatamente a verdadeira dimensão da sua volumetria. Em segundo lugar, esta implantação, através de um braço longitudinal, permite proteger a casa da exposição a Norte, orientando os espaços de uso comum para Sul. No mesmo gesto, consegue também “virar costas” à presença da grande instalação industrial implantada no tardoz do quarteirão, a Norte.
Desta forma, a implantação em “L” permite orientar as zonas de dormir a Nascente e as zonas de estar a Sul/Poente, gerando um espaço exterior resguardado da envolvente e voltado ao Sol, assumindo-se como um núcleo central de privacidade, espaço e luz.
Ao longo do braço mais comprido desenvolve-se um alpendre contínuo voltado a Sul — uma extensão habitável da casa, simultaneamente espaço de permanência, circulação e proteção climática. No lado oposto, uma rampa acompanha o declive natural do terreno e cose as diferentes cotas exteriores.
Em termos programáticos, a casa organiza-se através de uma separação clara entre os usos sociais e íntimos, dedicando o volume longo às áreas sociais e o volume curto às áreas privadas. Em ambos os volumes tira-se partido da configuração das coberturas em duas águas para criar dois espaços de sótão habitáveis.
Assim, a sala de estar e a cozinha ocupam o espaço contínuo do volume maior, sem barreiras visuais, sob o amplo desvão da cobertura. Perpendicularmente a este volume distribuem-se quatro quartos com instalações sanitárias individuais e um closet partilhado por dois deles. Na intersecção entre os dois volumes localizam-se os átrios de circulação, a despensa, o lavabo social e a escada de acesso ao sótão do volume principal.
O sótão do volume menor é acessível através do quarto de topo, onde uma escada em carpintaria funciona simultaneamente como elemento de acesso e como armário/estante. Ao nível da cobertura integra-se ainda um terraço técnico destinado aos equipamentos e infraestruturas necessárias ao funcionamento da casa.
No espaço exterior localizam-se a lavandaria e uma instalação sanitária, ambas sob a continuação da cobertura de duas águas do volume principal. Num patamar superior implanta-se a piscina e, por fim, na cota mais baixa junto à frente de rua, organiza-se o terreiro destinado ao estacionamento de três veículos.
