One of the primary objectives by AKKM & Associates – Architecture and Urban Design was to minimize the building’s coverage in order to maximize space for gardens. The two apartments on the first two floors are aligned as a block parallel to the street, separating the site as well as the outdoor spaces into two sections
Design: Partisans. Inspiration came directly from the site, an island located in Georgian Bay, Canada. The unique and rugged landscape is a prehistoric geological record, carved by shifting plates and glacial erosion. We were also inspired by the notion of a Grotto, a secret internal world, internally carved by natural forces.

The future National Memorial to Victims of Communism will be prominently located on Confederation Boulevard (Wellington Street) beside the Supreme Court of Canada and Library and Archives Canada, with views toward the Peace Tower and other key federal institutions
