Cliff Hanger House sits high on the slopes of Mount Paku, seemingly floating above the rugged coastline 35 metres below.
Designed to mirror the mountain’s contours, the home’s angled roof and organic form integrate seamlessly into the dramatic landscape, capturing expansive views across Tairua Harbour to Slipper Island.
The compact 106m² plan includes two generous bedrooms with ensuites, positioned at opposite ends for privacy, two living areas, and a hidden laundry/storage zone. At the centre, an open-plan kitchen, dining, and lounge area flows to the main deck, where a louvered roof system provides sheltered outdoor living.
A roof window and book nook add warmth and natural light to the space.
Cantilevered on slim steel supports over steep terrain, the structure evokes the feel of a treehouse suspended above the sea.
Timber walkways and decks with glass balustrades enhance the connection to the landscape, while Western Red Cedar cladding blends the home into its coastal setting.
Passive design principles, including strategic skylights, cross ventilation, thermally efficient materials, and low-E double glazing ensure year-round comfort. Cliff Hanger House is a striking example of site-responsive architecture—merging innovation, sustainability, and a deep respect for place.
