Redevelopment of 601 Lexington Avenue

Architects Gensler design a 200,000-sqft ‘Market Building’ consisting of a new outdoor plaza and terraces, an interior atrium space with retail and restaurants.

Location: 601 Lexington Avenue, Midtown East, NYC, NY, USA

601 Lexington Avenue is located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan at East 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue, directly across from 599 Lexington Avenue. This 59-story building has direct access to the Atrium Shops and Cafes, home to first class shopping, restaurants and a health club. It also provides the convenience of access to New York City’s five boroughs through its prime location atop a major subway station.

601 Lexington Avenue’s world-recognized silhouette was designed by Hugh Stubbins & Associates and Emery Roth & Sons. Built in 1977, the retail atrium and open-air concourse were renovated in 1997. A new office lobby was built in 2010. The property is held in a joint venture and Boston Properties’ ownership share is 55%.

The Midtown East skyscraper formerly known as the Citicorp Center, now called simply 601 Lexington Avenue, was made an official city landmark this past December, thanks to distinctive features including its 45-degree angular roof and base of four columns that resemble stilts, reports 6sqft.

When designed by Hugh A. Stubbins & Associates in 1978, the site also included a privately owned public space with a connection to the Lexington Avenue-53rd Street subway station, which co-owner Boston Properties is now looking to update.

They’ve tapped the designers at Gensler to envision a 200,000-square-foot “Market Building,” which will consist of a new outdoor plaza and terraces, as well as an interior atrium space that will host trendy dining and retail options.
