Highbury Corner Building in North London

Highbury Corner is an important node in the local urban fabric of Islington; the surrounding mix of post war buildings are set within a wider context of a Georgian and Victorian streetscape.

The scheme is born out of a study into the classical proportions and ratios of the historic context whilst focusing on the texture, tone and quality of natural hand-made materials. A considered approach to detailing, materials, proportions and form takes key influences from the neighbouring historic buildings. Modular proportions and ratios provide for a balanced form with clear hierarchy, a set of principles evolved from those which form the basis of the sites Georgian and Victorian surroundings.

Articulation of the façade is informed by a series of datum levels established within the surrounding context whilst also reacting to the interior programme. As the uses shift through the building from public to work to private, the façade also shifts to become lighter and more elegant, transcending above the harsh urban environment below.
