Bogle Architects win planning approval for new London hotel
Bogle Architects have obtained planning consent for a new hotel on Balham High Road, London. The project – on the site of a former Post Office – provides a 90-key budget hotel for international travellers.
The hotel’s main façade fronts onto Balham High Road, one of the historic arterial routes between Central London and the Southwest. The 760 sqm gap site has created the opportunity for a contemporary reinterpretation of a typical Victorian terrace façade, integrating a rigorous architectural rhythm that echoes the fenestration patterns of its immediate neighbours.
Using traditional materials, this contemporary contextual approach has created a distinctive architectural intervention, reinstating the historic continuous façade line along Balham High Road, and providing new retail amenities at ground floor level as well as a new, smaller Post Office.
The project comprises a single block stepping in height from three storeys in the central section, to four storeys fronting Balham High Road and Penny Mews. The rear end of the site opens onto a small-scale residential cul-de-sac providing a green courtyard for external use. The scheme’s considered massing successfully negotiates the change in scale and has been designed to avoid potential overlooking.
The scheme creates a new public ‘pocket’ park on Penny Mews, improving the outlook and providing a public amenity for the direct benefit of the local residents. The entire building is fully accessible for both visitors and staff; the scheme is also energy efficient, maximising natural daylight and ventilation, minimising environmental impacts and targeting the highest BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating.
