Western Avenue (A40) Footbridge

Grimshaw, in association with Hyder Consulting, is delighted to announce the opening of their new footbridge over the A40 Western Avenue in Acton. Designed for Transport for London’s Streets department, the footbridge is one element of a major redevelopment project for this stretch of road which has also seen the replacement of two major road bridges.

The bright yellow span replaces a damaged existing footbridge that provided stepped access only. The new bridge is served by both ramps and stairs and provides improved access for pushchairs, cyclists and wheelchairs to a safe route across the busy dual carriageway for the entire local community, including hundreds of schoolchildren.

The key design challenge was to locate the bridge foundations and access ramps in the limited space available space alongside the highway. This complexity was increased by the quantity of utility services buried under the pavements. A 30m span placed diagonally across the road resolved the problems and ensured that the bridge is visible from the A40. The span also marks the highest point on the A40, before it descends into central London, and provides views to Westminster and the City.

The new footbridge was designed so that the old one could remain in place until the new span was completed. This was installed in a single lift in one overnight closure of the road – the first ever planned complete closure of the A40. Once in place, this span and its new stairs were opened for public use whilst the old footbridge was demolished to make room for the new ramps. These were installed whilst the new span was open, minimising disruption and eliminating the need for a temporary crossing.

The official opening of the Perryn Road Footbridge marks the successful completion of the entire A40 bridges replacement project.
