Seoul Design Competition : Korean Architecture Contest

Seoul Design Olympiad : World Design Capital 2010 – Korea, Asia

As Seoul, Korea, has been selected as the World Design Capital 2010 there are so many competitions, fairs, and so on. The Seoul Design Olympiad is one of the biggest fairs and will be held Oct. 9 to Oct. 29, this year. This competition is one of events of the fair.

Seoul Design Competition 2009 Brief

Breaking away from a disciplinary boundary, it welcomes innovative ideas conceived from multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural backgrounds and between different industries, as well as encourages interflow, fusion and consilience in producing and manufacturing processes, aiming to discover a new promising potential and create inventive ideas.

– Interflow: To flow into each other – ex. High & Low, Slow & Fast, East & West, Past and Present
– Consilience: The unity of knowledge – ex. Oriental and Western Medicine, Columbus & Bill Gates, Leonardo da Vinci & Darwin’s Theory of Evolution
– Fusion: The merging of different elements into a union – ex. Food & Technology, Food & Clothes

Category:
There is no limitation in category, but multidisciplinary approaches to the definition of design solutions are recommended.

Seoul Design Competition – Submission

All entry materials must be written in English
Any identifying information must not appear anywhere other than in the entry form.

Stage 1 – Internet submission (Jun. 1 ~ Jul. 15)

What to submit (Three items in all)
– Entry Form : Complete and submit the online entry form at the SDO homepage.
The entry form includes work profiles(title, written description within 500 characters) and personal data(name, nationality, job, contact information and etc).
– Images : Files should be in JPG format(200dpi or higher in RGB), no larger than 10MB in total capacity, and vertically-oriented. Max. two pages in A3 size (W297×H420mm)
Image files should be in JPG format (200dpi or higher), but there is no limitation in form (A panel, a single image or a combination of multiple images is acceptable).
In case of animations, major still cuts in JPG format should be submitted in the first round of judging. (Entrants selected in the first round of judging will be asked to submit their videos in the second round.)
– Written Description: Written description should be in MS-Word file format. (Max. 3 pages in A4 size)

Stage 2 – Internet submission (Aug. 3~13): Entrants selected in the first round of judging are eligible

What to submit

– Entry form: Complete and submit the online entry form at the SDO homepage.
The entry form includes the same details as that in the first submission.(Unlike in the first round, it should be written in English only.)
– Images : Files should be in JPG format(200dpi or higher in RGB), no larger than 10MB in total capacity, and vertically-oriented. Max. 3 pages in A3 size(W297×H420mm)
Image files should be in JPG format (200dpi or higher), but there is no limitation in form (A panel, a single image or a combination of multiple images is acceptable).
Selected entrants are allowed to submit improved versions of their previous entries.
In case of animations, video should be submitted.(AVI format, 3D or 2D, 720×486pixel, max. 3 minutes.
Written Description: Written description should be in MS-Word file format. (Max. 3 pages in A4 size, English only)

Stage 3 – Submission by mail or in person (Sep. 10~23): Entrants shortlisted in the second round of judging are eligible.

What to submit (Four items in all)

– Entry Form: Download the entry form at the SDO homepage and fill it out
– One image for presentation board: JPG format(RGB for online exhibition and CMYK for on-site display, 200dpi or higher), A0 size(W840×H1188mm), vertical format, written description included.
– One image for catalogue: JPG format(CMYK, 200dpi or higher), A5 size(W148×H210mm), vertical format.
– One video clip(AVI format, 3D or 2D, 720×486pixel, max. 3 minutes), or a sample product(mock-up, or one-sided prototype is acceptable.)
Both a video clip and a sample product are acceptable.
Files in 3D format are recommended in principle, but if unavailable(web design, 2D animation), moving images in 2D format are acceptable as well.
Shortlisted entrants are allowed to make improvements to their designs based on the jurors’ comments from the second judging round. and submit the improved versions.

How to submit: Entries should be submitted either by mail or in person on September 10 through 23. More detailed instructions will be notified to shortlisted entrants individually.

March 27 : Announcement of call for submissions
June 1~ July 15 : Stage 1 – Internet submission (SDO homepage, no later than Jul. 15,
at 24:00, KST)
July 30 : Announcement of the first selections
August 3 ~ 13 : Stage 2 – Internet submission (SDO homepage, no later than Aug. 13, at 24:00, KST)
August 26 : Announcement of the second selections
September 10 ~ 23 : Stage 3 – Submission by mail or in person(Completed submissions should be delivered no later than Sep. 23)
October 9 ~ 29 : Exhibition of shortlisted entries (Oct. 9~29), The third judging round (Oct. 9~11), Finalists announcement (Oct. 15), Catalogue Production
Citizens will vote for the ‘People’s Choice Award’ on site during the exhibition(Oct. 9~13, scheduled)
October 29 : Awards Ceremony
