Arab du Monde lnstitute
One of the strongest buildings of President Mitterrand´s “Les Grands Projects”
Famous for its arabic-inspired fenestration where small oculi open & contract to allow varying levels of light in. The Institute du Monde Arabe was a result of one of the first Grands Projet architecture competitions. Much of the building is quite dark inside, with some rather leftover spaces, especially in the Lower level. The overall massing and clever orignailty of the architecture however make it a Paris building well worth visiting.

Commonwealth Institute
The Commonwealth Institute has stood empty and been closed to the public since 2002. In 2006, the grade II* listed building (one of the highest protection ratings possible in the UK), was threatened with demolition after a (failed) government proposal to delist it. OMA’s design seeks to save the building by re-injecting life into the modernist monument while retaining its distinctive copper roof and parabolic form. Three new residential buildings will integrate into the fabric of the site, and aim to create a boost for the western end of Kensington High Street.

Smithsonian Institute
Now designated as a National Historic Landmark, the former United States Patent Building building was rescued from impending demolition in 1958 by President Eisenhower, who transferred it to the Smithsonian Institution for use as the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The enclosure of the building’s grand central courtyard was prompted by a desire to transform the public’s experience of the Smithsonian’s galleries and provide the Institution with one of the largest spaces in the state.
