Van Ommeren architects reveals design for final phase Scheepmakerskwartier, Haarlem-NL
At walking distance from the Haarlem city center a new district is being developed: the scheepmakerskwartier (litt. Ship builders district). At the intersection of the bigger scale industrial landscape and the smaller scale of the inner city canal houses, a 52-57 apartment building is designed.

The building reacts on the rawness of the location and facilitates a wide range of housing types, varying from extra high maisonettes (4.5m+) to facade-to-facade lofts, referring to the beloved Dutch “doorzonwoning”.
Several rigid cuts are made in the volume in order to make the connection with both the industrial- and the inner city scale. Collective hallways are situated within these cuts, in order to lit them 24/7 and give a spectacular view when entering the apartments.
A collective parking and bike storage is situated out of sight, in the heart of the building. On op of the collective plinth several volumes with different heights are situated. Different types and applications of brickwork reveal the inner diversity of the different apartments.
The entrances are marked with artworks by Marte Röling.
Construction of De Scheepmaker (name of the building) is expected to early 2017.
About the architect
VanOmmeren-architecten is an Amsterdam based architecture studio headed by Joeri Ivar van Ommeren(1987). Joeri worked on several bigger scale infrastructural and architectural projects for Santiago Calatrava(2009, 2014) and Thijs Asselbergs(2011-2013) before starting his own office in 2013.
Today VanOmmeren-architecten works on a diverse range of projects, with a main focus on residential projects.
