The Architectural Photography Awards exhibition celebrating the finest architectural photography worldwide opens to public today at the Turkish Trade Centre for Architecture and Design.

Now in its sixth year, the Architectural Photography Awards exhibition is a well-established event in the architectural calendar, celebrating the importance of photography in the way we experience and connect with spaces. This year’s exhibition showcases the winning image and shortlisted entries of the Architectural Photography Awards 2018, announced during WAF in November last year.

The exhibition showcases the world’s most renowned architectural photographers including overall winner Pawel Paniczko, as well as short listed entrants He Zhenhuan, John Pinder, Andrew Robertson, Marco Tagliarino, Omer Kanipak. The international panel of judges comprises James Timberlake, Amy Croft, Katy Harris, Richard Bryant, Terrence Zhang, Roy Meiklejon, Alan Capel, Paul Mottram, Rainer Sladek, Sandra Barclay & Jean Pierre Crousse, Kimberly Hoang and Sven Ullrich.

In the short-listing process the panel were asked to look beyond the architecture to the composition, light, scale, atmosphere, sense of place and interpretation of the project.

Architectural Photography Awards 2018 Portfolio category:

Portfolio category winner: Pawel Paniczko, Harbin Opera House in Harbin, China by MAD Architects

Divided into six categories – Buildings in Use, Exteriors, Interiors, Sense of Place, Mobile and Portfolio – each explores different architectural qualities and a diverse technical methodology. The exhibition showcases a wide range of photographic styles, as well as featuring a variety of outstanding architectural forms.

When speaking about taking his winning image, overall winner of the Architectural Photography Awards 2018 Pawel Paniczko said:

“I love to photograph buildings that create emotions and both Long Museum West Bund and Harbin Opera House were these kinds of structures. Spending a time in and around these buildings, watching how people interact with them and how the light changes in the course of a day, was truly inspirational. That helped me to catch the essence of the buildings presented in my images. Shooting in China on my own was logistically challenging but also a fantastic experience.

Sense of Place category winner:

I am extremely delighted and proud that my work has been appreciated and that I have won The Architectural Photography Awards 2018. Winning 2 categories wasn’t something that I was expecting at all. Especially a portfolio category – it has a huge meaning for me personally, as it proves that I can create a meaningful set of photographs presenting the subject at its best.”

The Architectural Photography Awards exhibition is free and open to the public from 19th June – 30th August at Turkish Trade Centre for Architecture and Design in St Cross Street, Clerkenwell, London.

The Turkish Trade Centre, the new hub for architecture and design, is located in the heart of London’s creative Clerkenwell district. The 1,000 sq m showroom and events space features products and services ranging from ceramics, natural stone and marble, tiles, bathroom furniture to architectural offices, construction, design and consultancy.

Since its inception in 2012, with the support of the World Architecture Festival and facade and interior system manufacturer STO SE & Co, The Architectural Photography Awards coverage has moved from local trade papers to global news media.

The Awards are inclusive of both the full-time professional photographer and the keen amateur. Categories range from a portfolio of an individual building to a single abstract: with a professional camera or on a mobile phone.

Images of the built world are used directly and indirectly for promoting and advertising commercial, financial, automotive and travel industries; they are not confined to architecture and property development.

Nevertheless, the skill of the people who can translate the sophistication of architecture into readable and understandable two dimensions, explain and extol the character, detail and environment of a building, remains overlooked.
