Architecture events at the National Gallery during the London Festival of Architecture

The London Festival of Architecture takes place from 19 June to 4 July 2010 and will be a city-wide celebration of architecture in the capital. The National Gallery’s free events for its June Focus ‘Perspectives’ joins in with this celebration of architecture in the capital.

28 Jun : Lunchtime theatre talk, 1pm
Classicism and Modernity: the National Gallery Sainsbury wing

The design of the Sainsbury Wing tested how far the rules of Classical architecture can be inflected while still remaining coherent. Professor Tim Benton, Open University teacher with research interests in the field of modern architecture, has worked on a number of major exhibitions, including ‘Modernism; designing a new world’ and will put his views on the Sainsbury Wing Building into context, examining the relationship between painting and architecture.

Join National Gallery Archivist Alan Crookham for a guided tour of the history of the National Gallery building.  Find out why Trafalgar Square was chosen as the ideal place for the National Gallery and how the building has been extended over the years to create exciting new gallery spaces. (Places are limited to 50, first-come, first-served on the day).

25 Jun : Lunchtime Talk and Draw
Architecture: The National Gallery Building
Join Adult Learning Officer Katy Tarbard for a short talk about the architecture of the National Gallery façade followed by an opportunity to draw the building in the open air. All materials and advice from artist Viyki Turnbull to get you started are provided for free. (Spaces are limited to 40, first-come, first-served on the day from the Getty Information Desk)

Architects Alex De Rijke, Jeremy Dixon and Christine de Baan, Director of the Dutch Design Fashion and Architecture discuss their architectural projects.

18 Jun: Points of View theatre talk. 6.30 – 7.15pm
‘An unfinished architectural project for the National Gallery’
Architect Jeremy Dixon of the successful Dixon-Jones practice will discuss how new projects can radically alter the way an existing building is perceived, creating a more welcoming space for visitors. Discussing work undertaken for the National Portrait Gallery, the Henry Moore Foundation and the National Gallery East Wing Project completed in 2005 which created the Sir Paul Getty Entrance, Annenberg Court and re- designed the Portico main entrance, Jeremy will also share his personal views on how the Gallery could develop in the future.

25 Jun: Points of View theatre talk. 6.30 – 7.15pm
‘The Ark’
Architect Alex De Rijke is one of the co-founders of dRMM Architects, a London based studio of international architects and designers. The practice has become synonymous with innovative, high quality and socially relevant architecture. Alex will share the trials and joys of designing his own ‘Ark’, a river barge in Belgium with living accommodation, office space and an exhibition gallery.
