Planning consent granted for NBBJ’s innovative Cancer Centre at the James Cook University
December 8, 2009 – Middlesbrough Council has granted planning consent for the development of a new oncology centre at The James Cook University Hospital. The project is being developed under the NHS P21 programme by Interserve Health with the London studio of international architects, NBBJ, as the lead designer.
Inspired by the healing environments for the comfort of cancer patients achieved at Maggie’s Centres, NBBJ’s new freestanding Satellite Centre at James Cook will provide heavy diagnostic and radiation treatment services in equally supportive surroundings – achieved through thoughtful architecture, varied humanistic settings including art, abundant natural light and materials in a garden environment.
The project showcases an innovative approach to the delivery of clinical services in which new linear accelerators, the associated planning suite and outpatient examination and consultation areas will be located in the Satellite, 50 metres from the existing department. Extensive modeling revealed that this unusual split would, on balance, enable numerous operational and environmental benefits.
The existing facility will remain in operation during a concurrent programme of phased refurbishment and expansion. P+HS is leading the refurbishment of the existing facility and is completing construction documents for both projects.
Construction is projected to start Dec 2009, with a completion in summer 2011.
