Newcastle-based architecture practice Harper Perry Architects has won the RIBA Competition to design a new waterfront housing development in Hull on behalf of Hull City Council.

The international competition sought design ideas to redevelop two waterfront city centre locations, Humber Quays West and Hull Arena. All designs were asked to embrace the principles of ‘Living with Water’ and deal with flood risk.

Harper Perry were unanimously selected by the Evaluation Panel following interviews with all five shortlisted teams held at the Guildhall in Hull on Thursday 4 July 2019.

The other shortlisted teams were:

• Alessandra Covino with CBO Architects
• AR Urbanism with Greysmith Associates, London
• Condy Lofthouse Architects, Liverpool
• John Puttick Associates, London

Charlie Spencer the landowner for the Humber Quays West site commented:
“I understand that Harper Perry have been chosen by the Council and the Spencer Group as the winners of the design ideas competition for our land at Humber Quays and the council’s Hull Arena.

Once the site has been utilised by the Highways England contractor for the A63 contract it will be available for development.

The architects have presented an exciting and sustainable scheme to bring the riverside to life in a memorable and distinct style. We wish them the very best of luck and offer our congratulations”.

Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for planning, land and property, said: “This fascinating competition is just the latest chance for Hull to again show we are nothing short of a world leader in water resilience.

“Humber Quays West and Hull Arena are two of the city’s most prestigious redevelopment opportunities. This winning design shows how forward-thinking this city will be when developing sites such as this, with water in mind.”
