Aedas has been appointed to redevelop the proposed new Hereford Academy at the former Wyebridge Sports College. Contracted by Willmott Dixon, the practice was chosen as the preferred bidder over Kiers’ team and their architect Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. The £22m project proposal was very well received and the team will be interpreting the Academy Governors’ dynamic educational vision through an innovative design.
The project seeks to construct a new academy on the existing Hereford Academy site for 1120 pupils aged 11 – 18 incorporating a 220 student sixth form, together with car park and playing fields. The academy will be 10,144 sq m, with costs incorporating £21.2 million for construction and a further £1.6 million for ICT equipment.
Sustainability objectives have been integrated into the proposal from the outset, with the scheme achieving a Breeam Very Good rating with an aspiration of Excellent to be developed over the coming months and an EPC rating of B. The academy will use a biomass boiler for its heat source, green roof as part of a rainwater harvesting strategy complemented by innovative building engineering services.
Work is due to start in September 2009 subject to planning approval, with completion of the new building expected in Easter 2011 and the soft playing fields and MUGA pitches completed by October 2011 following the demolition of the existing buildings on site.
