Frederiksborg Castle is a Danish castle located in Hillerod. The castle’s first part was built in 1560 by King Frederik ll. His son, Christian lV tore most of his father’s palace down and built a new castle in the period 1600-1620 in Dutch Renaissance style. The castle is built primarely of red bricks and is richly decorated with religious and royal statues.

The oldest part of Hill Holm, now known as Frederiksborg Castle’s existence dates back to1275.

Frederik ll had several small pleasure house construction in the area around the castle. In 1580-81 Badstuen, which still lies in the natural area surrounding the castle and to this day used by the court, was built.

In December 1859 a devastating fire ravaged the palace. The castle was rebuilt by architect Ferdinand Meldahl in year 1860-84 with financial support from brewer J.C.Jacobsen and later the Carlsberg Foundation.

The Castle Church interior, however, was only slightly affected and remains in its original form.

In 1996 the large park behind the castle reopened after extensive refurbishment. The park layout is symmetrically mirrored on a longitudinal axis which run through a series of cascades.
